The Approach of The Fertility Support Company
At The Fertility Support Company all patients start with a consultation with Naava Carman. As an acupuncturist and herbal medicine practitioner, Naava has been using Traditional Chinese Medicine to support patients with fertility issues for over 10 years. The consultation will begin with Naava taking a detailed medical history, as well as discussing wider issues such as nutrition and stress levels.
In many cases Naava will use her experience of working with men and women who have faced the full range of fertility issues to recommend Western medical diagnostic tests that may assist in identifying the underlying cause of a fertility issue. Naava may also recommend that a patient sees another one of The Fertility Support Company practitioners for Western medical treatments, nutritional support, or emotional/psychological support.
When working to help achieve a pregnancy, all of The Fertility Support Company’s practitioners share the ethos that it is important to look after your mental and emotional well-being as well as the physical aspects of your condition. This approach is supported by both Western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine in their respective understandings of the way that our reproductive health is influenced by our emotions.
For example, Western Medicine recognises that stress can play an enormous part in reproduction as it affects the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, which in turn affect ovulation. Similarly, in Traditional Chinese Medicine terms stress can affect the flow of energy from the heart, which controls sleep and is connected to the functioning of the uterus. Therefore, when a woman comes to us having been diagnosed with fertility related issues, it is always essential to pay attention to both the mental/emotional and the physical aspects of the condition in order to support conception and a healthy pregnancy.
Acupuncture and fertility
Acupuncture is increasingly being used in conjunction with Western medicine to support patients with fertility issues. In 2007 and 2008 Naava Carman worked with two of the UK’s leading Consultants in the treatment of infertility, Stuart Lavery and Geoff Trew, to set up the first acupuncture clinic to be integrated into an IVF unit.
There is no clearly established Western medical opinion as to the efficacy of acupuncture in treating fertility issues however there are studies which claim a positive link between acupuncture and assisted reproductive techniques. One such example is a 2008 study published in the British Medical Journal that concluded that, "preliminary evidence suggests that acupuncture given with embryo transfer improves rates of pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing in vitro fertilisation [IVF]."
The Fertility Support Company uses acupuncture based on Traditional Chinese Medicine to support patients with fertility problems. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) sees fertility issues as fundamentally being caused by an imbalance in the body’s energy (known as “Qi”). TCM is an holistic system of medicine that links the state of mind of the patient with their physical health and symptoms. A TCM practitioner therefore seeks to diagnose the imbalance of energy in the mind and body that is seen as the cause of a patient’s illness or symptom and use acupuncture and herbal preparations to restore the balance.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complementary therapy and the Fertility Support Company does not advocate it as an alternative to Western medicine. If you are in any doubt about your health or symptoms you are experiencing you should consult your doctor. The Fertility Support Company and its practitioners do not claim to “cure” infertility or any other ailment.
