The 'On-Time and Induction' Service
The due date is determined in 2 ways; the LMP or last menstrual period, or the EDD which is the estimated due date. Most GP’s will date from the last menstrual period, but this is a date which often leads to confusion. Babies are conceived at the time of ovulation, which in a typical 28 day cycle will occur on day 14. Therefore, the due date of the baby will be at 40 weeks from this date of conception, and not two weeks earlier from the first day of the last period. Knowing that your baby is not due until two week after the due date that the Doctor has given you, gives you an extra two weeks at the end of the pregnancy. This can prevent you from being booked in for a premature induction, and can assist you in having a natural birth.

Of course, a more accurate date can be obtained through ultrasound scanning which looks at the size of the baby and the thickness of the endometrium among other things. This date should be placed along side the date of conception to determine the most accurate due date.

If mothers go over 42weeks, then hospitals will often book them in for an induction. This is not medically necessary, according to NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence www.nice.org.uk) unless the baby is in distress. This can be seen through the presence of meconium,

We date our three weeks of treatment from the EDD, not the LMP.

Over the years, we at The Fertility Support Company have found that 90% of mothers-to-be treated once per week with acupuncture in the three weeks leading up to their EDD go into labour within five days either side of this date. We are so confident of the benefits of pre-birth acupuncture treatment that we offer an induction treatment if you exceed your due date by more than 5 days.

In the past few years we have only twice had to give an induction treatment after a course of pre-birth acupuncture. Indeed, recent research from New Zealand has confirmed that pre-birth acupuncture treatment increases the chances of a prompt labour. Please click here to see the latest of these studies.
