Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome/OHSS
Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) occurs when the response to injections to stimulate egg production is greater than normally would be expected. The symptoms usually begin 4-5 days after the eggs have been collected. In the mild-to-moderate form of the syndrome, symptoms may include enlarged ovaries, a feeling of discomfort in the abdomen, and nausea.

If the syndrome is severe, patients may also experience swelling of the abdomen causing shortness of breath and a reduction in the amount of urine produced. This form of the syndrome does, however, occur in less than 1% of women affected. If the syndrome is very severe, hospital admission may be necessary.' (Irvine, R, 1996)

The Fertility Support Company provides an intensive responsive treatment when the first signs of OHSS are detected. A daily treatment for three days is provided, and at the end of these three days, most women are able to go on to have the transfer, as symptoms of bloating, nausea and internal swelling will have subsided significantly.
