Ectopic pregnancies (where the egg implants in the cervix, ovary, abdomen or, more often, the fallopian tube instead of within the uterine lining) often, sadly, end up in the mother loosing the fallopian tube, thereby making a subsequent natural conception harder. Having only one tube makes conception that little bit more difficult, and sometimes means going through IVF if the tube has to be removed.
Certain conditions can create a predisposition to ectopic pregnancy, for example previously undiagnosed sexually transmitted diseases which leave scarring, or tubal surgery.
